Getting To Avoca

Avoca is situated midway between Albany and Denmark on the south coast of Western Australia. Approximately 440 km from Perth, the most direct route is along the Albany Highway. The journey from Perth to Avoca takes about 5 hours. There are several roadhouses en route which sell fuel and food.

Suggested stops on route: The Wool Shed in Williams or The Plum and Ivy cafe that serves great coffee and food. The Kojonup Visitors Centre, as well as being a retail outlet for Australian made products, also houses Kodja Place which displays many aboriginal artefacts.

Also, on the same site, is the unique Australian Rose Maze. The Black Cockatoo Cafe serves a range of delicious foods and coffee. If you have the time, a visit to the old Police Station museum on the outskirts of Mount Barker is well worth a stop.

After passing the Albany Airport: Shortly after passing the Albany Airport (10km north of Albany ) take LINK Road to your right. At the T junction (approximately 4kms) turn right on to SOUTH COAST HIGHWAY. Stanley Road is a further 22km, on the left with Avoca signage clearly visible.

Close to Wilson Inlet and the beautiful drive along the Nullaki Peninsula to Anvil Beach, Youngs Siding is located on the edge of the West Cape Howe National Park with its four wheel drive tracks, spectacular views, great fishing spots and world renowned Bibbulmun Track and Munda Biddi Cycle Trail.

  • Visit Woodworks Gallery and discover fine wood at its best - on display is furniture as well as useful and purely decorative items lovingly created by dozens of local craftsmen. Enjoy a coffee in the tranquil cottage garden, where blue wrens abound.
  • Call in at the studios of other skilled craftsmen, or stop and relax over wine tasting at some of the local wineries.
  • Bring your boat and enjoy the beautiful waters of Walpole, Denmark and Albany.

  • The Albany Residency (early 1850s), now a fine museum
  • The Old Gaol, built in 1851 as a convict hiring depot and from 1872 used as the district gaol
  • Visit the world famous National Anzac Centre, the Anzac Memorial and The Forts, all located in the Albany Heritage Park, Forts Road. Take time to explore the area, a fascinating insight into the strategic value of Albany’s harbour and its important history.
  • Patrick Taylor Cottage, built around 1832 and one of the oldest buildings still standing in Albany
  • The Old Farm Strawberry Hill, the first farm established in Western Australia which boasts a two storey stone house, built in 1836 as the private home of the Government Resident at Albany
  • The Old Post Office, opened in 1870, now immaculately restored and one of Albany 's undoubted treasures
  • The Forts, a fascinating reminder of the strategic value of Albany 's harbour with its hidden gun batteries and nearby barracks

  • Visit Albany Discovery Centre, located on the site of the original Cheynes Beach Whaling Company which ceased operating in 1978. Whaleworld is the only whaling museum created from a working whaling station.   • Albany’s Farmers Market on a Saturday morning and the Boat Shed markets on a Sunday morning are worthy of a visit for that fresh local produce.
  • Take a boat cruise, visit the Wind Farm or a winery, dive on the HMAS Perth wreck or explore the replica brig Amity - you will find yourself spoiled for choice.
  • Visit the Porongurup National Park for exciting climbs, spectacular views and world class wine tasting.

Denmark is a delightful small town set amongst forest and rolling hills and is home to many wonderful artists and craftspersons -

  • Visit the artists in their studios, where they create outstanding paintings, sculptures, pottery, glass and fine wood pieces
  • Excellent wineries also abound, some of which offer great food as well as fine wine
  • At Bartholomews Meadery, one of the very few in Australia , other honey products as well as wine may be sampled and you can view the bees at work in their glass-walled hive
  • William Bay National Park includes the renowned Green's Pool, which provides a safe and protected swimming area, Elephant Rocks, Waterfall Beach and Madfish Bay
  • Whale watching is very popular from July to October from vantage points along the coast, including popular surfing spot Ocean Beach , and there are many great fishing spots
  • The world famous Tree Top Walk in the Valley of the Giants offers an unforgettable experience
  • Close by is Dinosaur World, a fun experience for young and old.
  • Enjoy the delights of The Toffee and Cider Factory, or the Denmark Chocolate Lounge.
  • For those with a taste for cheese, wine and all things sweet, the Denmark Cheese Factory on the Scotsdale Tourist drive is a must.
  • Pentland Alpaca Farm where children can enjoy seeing and handling many of the resident animals, both large and small.
  • The famous Denmark markets occur 4 times a year, on the banks of the Denmark River
  • Tour the Walpole and Nornalup Inlets on the WOW wilderness eco cruise

Denmark's main attraction lies in its stunning scenery and natural wonders and there are plentiful walk trails to allow the visitor to enjoy these to the full. If you like a challenge, the section of the famous Bibbulmun Track between Ocean Beach Road and Lights Road will take you right over the top of Mt Hallowell, where you will be rewarded with spectacular 360 degree views.
